Huchuy Qosqo was a settlement located at over 3,550 meters above sea level on a small plateau at the top of a mountain. From here, you can take in beautiful views of the other side of the valley, with the stunning snow-capped peaks like Mount Pitusiray, and in the background, the town of Calca. According to chroniclers, it was Inca Wiracocha who ordered the construction of the city of Huchuy Qosqo. It is said that in his old age, he felt tired and wished to leave governance and move away from the hustle and bustle of the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire (Cusco) to seek peace and tranquility in this place. It is built on a territory occupied by several human settlements, and over time, these would be dominated and incorporated into the Inca Empire. One of these settlements must have been precisely on Huchuy Qosqo.
We will pick you up from your hotel at 6:00 in the morning. From the city of Cusco, we will take transportation to the community of Patabamba, a journey of about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From there, we will begin the approximately 6-hour hike to the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo. Along the way, we will pass through the communities of Tincu, Patabamba Chico, until we reach the community of Pukamarca. Throughout the journey, we will observe potato, corn, vegetable, and native plant crops with ichu grass, shrubs, and queuña trees. Additionally, we will observe camelids, llamas, alpacas, and local birds such as the caracara and Huallata partridge. Then, we will cross an Inca Trail that passes through a small pass and leads us directly into a short and narrow stone canyon that guides us. We will arrive at the Huchuy Qosqo archaeological site around 1:30 pm, where we will have lunch and then visit the different sectors of the archaeological site. Huchuy Qosqo means “small Cusco” according to chronicles, and the site in Inca times was known as Caquia Jaquijahuana, the preferred place of Inca Wiracocha. In the place, there are long groupings of terraces with walls acting as retaining walls, leaving terraces suitable for agriculture. Additionally, you can see a three-story building, the first two of which are nearly regular polyhedrons and the third is made of adobe. The enclosure is rectangular and of excellent quality. After the tour around 3:00 pm, we will descend to the district of Lamay to board the tourist transport back to the city of Cusco, where we will arrive around 6:30 to 7:00 pm.
