Intipunku, also known as the Sun Gate, is a place where the Incas built a structure to venerate and thank the sun god, serving as a resting point. This trek is ideal for people who enjoy hiking and interacting with new cultures, as along the way we will encounter local inhabitants. It crosses the Urubamba River, offering extensive views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Ollantaytambo, with sightings of Mount Veronica and the Vilcanota mountain range.
This wonderful tour through the Sacred Valley begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 am. We will board our private transportation and head towards the district of Ollantaytambo, approximately a 2-hour journey. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, we will make a stop for a refreshing breakfast, then prepare ourselves to continue our beautiful journey. At around 9:00 am, we will start a challenging but incredible uphill hike for approximately 2 hours towards the CACHICATA quarry. Here, we will find the largest quarry that supplied stones for the construction of temples and palaces in the Inca town of Ollantaytambo. We will also observe the chullpas (tomb towers) built to house mummies, as well as the ramps used by the Incas to transport stones. You will have free time to enjoy a box lunch in this beautiful place. Then, we will continue the hike for about 1 hour to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where you can see the entire Sacred Valley and the imposing Mount Veronica. This place is considered magical and mystical, so we recommend fully enjoying this incredible spot. Finally, we will return to the community of Cachicata, around a 2-hour descent where our private transportation will be waiting to take us back to Ollantaytambo and then to the city of Cusco, where we will conclude our services by dropping you off at your respective hotel.
